paste style paint?! HELP

I just am not getting how to do this. I want thick paint for dragging textures through. I've seen a lot of people use this thick paint especially for Eric Carl style art. I'm at a loss of how to make this "paste" style of paint. I have tried mixing flour, cornstarch and glue (not at the same time) into paint to make it thicker and its still not right. Can anyone help me? I would really like to use this method for a background of a project...tomorrow!

  1. I like to use glitter paint for this technique as it seems to hold the "dragged" textures quite well. I have also mixed clear tempera extender with liquid watercolors to have the same effect. I have found that tempera paint doesnt work too well, as it drys really quickly. Maybe if you mixed something clear like art paste with tempera it would work.

  2. I have a recipe for thick paint at school. I'll try to remember to dig it out tomorrow for you!

  3. Not sure this is going to help you...because you most likely do not have this in you pantry but - I think you are looking for

    Methyl Cellulose

    Amongst all the pastes that pm craft people use, I consider this to be the best. It . . .

    - is non-toxic and even kind to the hands (it is a basis for many beauty products);
    - is extremely smooth and spreads well;
    - combines successfully with PVA (white glue);
    - dries without flaking or cracking;
    - is excellent for both layering and pulping;
    - can be easily washed from working surfaces;
    - gives a matt surface which can easily be glazed if you want.

    I found the above info on this blog:
    http://www.papiermache.co.uk/articles/papier-mache-paste/

    Basically it's one kind of wallpaper paste - so if there is a Home Depot on your way to work, you may be in business! It is all I use for paper mache but I was in a class where someone used it for paste paper!
    Good Luck! Susan

  4. Do you have Art Paste? The stuff that comes in a little box and mixes w/2 qts of water to make papier-mache goo that looks like dog drool? If you do, mix it up as usual, then mix some with some acrylic paint and it works GREAT for paste painting. It might also work with tempera, I don't recall. You can paint on one layer of it, then layer on another, and scratch into it etc.

  5. from my online research art paste seems to be the answer. I just went to Jo-ann's and Michaels and neither one had it in the store! I'm not sure where to go look in-town now. It takes about two months for anything I order via the school to get in :( I think I'll take your suggestion Susan and go check home depot for the Methyl Cellulose

  8. Found it. Not sure if this will work for what you are wanting to do- it is pretty thick!

    "Pudding" Paint - for Impasto - from the book "Art Fun!" by Kim Solga

    Mix 5 cups water, 2 cups white flour, 1/2 cup sugar, and 3 Tablespoons salt.
    Pour into saucepan and cook over medium heat until thick and bubbling (about 7 minutes) Cool well. This can be stored in the refrigerator in covered containers for several weeks. Spoon cooled "pudding" into containers and mix with 1/8 to 1/4 cup powdered or liquid tempera paint.

    Use a craft stick or palette knife to apply. Use heavy tagboard or cardboard, as it will curl. Maybe try on corrugated cardboard (recycled) for extra strength
