Yes so I'm absent from my blog, I'm not even going to make excuses. I have a baby, I'm tired.
Anyway I recently came upon a box of Prismacolor art stix...the woodless colored pencils. Needless to say there were awesome and I really want to get a bunch for my classroom. However, I can NOT afford to buy more than two sets of them for my classroom and I need 6-7 sets. So I am looking at the Crayola woodless colored pencil sticks as an alternative. I know they will never have the soft blend-ablity of a prismacolor but has anyone tried them and what did you think? Are they worth the money...do they last a while, would they work well in the middle school classroom? What are your thoughts?
Love them. I wrote a review of them a couple months ago on my blog. http://artteacheradventures.blogspot.com/2012/02/crayola-color-sticks-comparison-and.html
ReplyDeleteHope that helps, let me know if you have any questions!
I have used them and love them, they may not be quite as good as the others you refer to (which I love too). I think the art sticks ard a great alternative. They are a little thicker than the PC and so far I have been able to keep them in the plastic trays they come with. Buy the 24 set if you can!
ReplyDeleteI have used these with upper elementary and they worked really well. They are great for blending and coloring lighter and darker. They are also pretty durable as well- I told the kids that they had to take good care of them, and they lasted a long time.
ReplyDeleteYes these are amazing tools for any age classroom. Rich color and beautiful blending with layers of hue with no breaking points and irritating sharpening sounds in the classroom!! There is great flexibility in mark making with the broad rectangular edge and the square end. I bought the class pack and have tables share colors as there aren't enough for all to have the same colors. Would like to buy another classpack next year. Students love the results of this medium!
ReplyDeleteWhat are you planning to do with them? I got a sample in the mail, but couldn't really decide how to use them.
ReplyDeleteI use them with my classes, and the kids like them. I teach little ones (PK through 1st)and like the benefits of - no need to sharpen (my hand sharpener is the pits), and the shape helps keep them from rolling off the table. Downside - the cost. However, the set I bought at the beginning of the school year can go through to next year easily. So, big expense early, but they last. Colored pencils seem to be cheaply made, losing leads, etc. So, I do like them, and the kids love them.......hope this helps! Chris
ReplyDeleteThese have become a quick favorite in our 12 school K-5 elementary program! They are quite strong so little breakage of the sticks (unless kids actually try to break them). They show up well on all colors of paper (in the same way as "Construction paper crayons"). Wonderful for texture rubbings, too. Yes the initial cost is tough but they last and last! I love the sets of 24 colors. The art supply companies will have some good pricing over the summer or perhaps your district does bid pricing?
ReplyDeleteLove them, like everyone else said they are hard to break and lay down color quite nicely.
ReplyDeleteWe bought a class pack last year as well, they are great. Sharpening colored pencils is so annoying for my elementary kids! A few have cracked in half from major drops but they are pretty durable. Hardly any wear after several projects, so they really last!
ReplyDeleteSave up, do a fundraiser, they are worth it!
